The Dangers of Wasp Nests in Cornwall: Protecting Your Home and Health

4/9/2023

Wasp nests can be more than just an annoyance; they pose serious risks to both your property and your health. Cornwall's picturesque landscapes and coastal beauty make it an inviting place for residents and tourists alike. However, the warm climate and lush vegetation also attract pests, including wasps. In this article, we'll delve into the dangers of wasp nests in Cornwall, including allergic reactions and structural damage, and how our professional wasp nest removal services can help keep you safe.

The Health Risks of Wasp Nests
  1. Allergic Reactions: One of the most immediate and severe dangers associated with wasp nests is the risk of allergic reactions. For some individuals, a wasp sting can lead to a life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Even if you've never experienced an allergic reaction to a wasp sting before, it's crucial to remain cautious. Our team is equipped to handle wasp nests safely and minimize the risk of stings during removal.
  2. Multiple Stings: When wasps feel threatened, they release alarm pheromones that signal the entire colony to attack. This means that disturbing a wasp nest without proper training and equipment can result in multiple painful stings, increasing the likelihood of an allergic reaction or severe discomfort.

Structural Damage Caused by Wasp Nests
  1. Property Damage: Wasps often build their nests in sheltered locations, such as eaves, attics, or wall cavities. Over time, the wasp nest can grow in size and population, leading to structural damage. This can compromise the integrity of your property and result in costly repairs if left untreated.
  2. Stress and Disruption: A wasp nest near your home can cause ongoing stress and disruption. Fear of wasp encounters can limit your outdoor activities and affect your quality of life.

Wasp nests in Cornwall set to increase

Wasp nest in Cornwall
A large increase in the number of wasp nests in Cornwall, Devon and throughout the UK is predicted for the summer of 2015. Last year saw an estimated 87% increase in wasp numbers, and this year is set to see another rise in the numbers of wasps.

The wasp population is very dependent on the weather, with 2013 seeing a decrease in numbers. The cold winter, warm spring and predicted hot summer of this year is set to cause an increase in the wasp population. This may lead to an increase in the aggressiveness of the wasps, and there will be more wasp nests.

Wasp nests often occur in locations that raise concerns over the danger they present to your family and pets. It is not advisable to treat a wasp nest yourself, particularly as a large proportion of wasp nests are situated at height or in a confined space. Please call Kevin McMillan on 07723442669 or e-mail [email protected] for a free quote on treating a wasp nest in Cornwall, or in the Plymouth area.

An interesting article from the BBC highlights the trends in pest control problems last year, with some information obtained from the British Pest Control Association. Although Wales was the part of the UK with the most pest control required, there is useful information on the top types of pests. The most common UK pests are: rats, waps, mice, ants and fleas.

There have also been a few “interesting” visiting pests such as baboon spiders.
